Abyss

The Abyss acts as a barrier, as opposed to biomes, much like the Ocean. No living thing can cross the abyss, even flying mobs like Batilisks.

It is only present in Caves and Ruins in Sandbox Mode, and in Chapter 6 of Adventure Mode.

Objects that are situated very close to the abyss may drop their items in this endless pit, and aside from glitched objects, they will fall into the depths and be irretrievable.

Unlike its surface counterpart, the Ocean, which can spawn Pengulls, the Abyss currently doesn't spawn any mobs.

Don't Starve Together icon Don’t Starve Together[]

In Don't Starve Together, when walking on top of the abyss (through exploits or console commands), Terrorbeaks will transform into Terrorclaws, the variant that spawns in the surface Ocean. Since they don't have a ledge to latch onto (like the edge of a boat), they can attack while moving, have a very long attack range, and will be practically invisible in front of the pitch black abyss. Due to this, it is highly advised to avoid using the void walker exploit unless the player has a way of keeping their sanity above the insanity threshold.

Placeholder Trivia[]

  • In the early versions of the Caves, terrain was limited by walls instead of the abyss.

Mosquito Bugs[]

  • Items that drop in the Abyss will make a splash animation as if it were made of water.
  • Naturally spawning entities such as mushrooms can sometimes spawn in the abyss.
  • There have been instances of Flotsam spawning in the abyss of the caves.
  • It is possible to hover over the Abyss by approaching the edge at high speeds (40+). However, the speed required to achieve this cannot be legitimately obtained.
