Bioluminescence is a passive immobile Mob introduced in the Shipwrecked DLC. It is found in Deep Oceans in groups of 12. It can be considered the aquatic version of Fireflies, and emits light during the night. It will not appear until dusk arrives, and will stay until dawn. It does however still persist during a Full Moon. Once found, it can be caught with Trawl Net or Net while it is visible. Unlike Fireflies, it won't disappear when player character approaches, so they can be used as a permanent protection against Charlie.
Bioluminescence can be used to craft Bottle Lanterns, Buoys, and can be used to refuel Bottle Lanterns, Miner Hats as well as Boat Lanterns (restores 38.5% of its capacity). It does not change location so once the map is generated, its location can be marked on the map by placing any items that have a map icon, such as Backpack, Log Raft, Raft or placing a Buoy nearby.
Bioluminescence is currently non-renewable. It has a spawner in the files, but the spawner removes itself after world generation. When dropped on land, bioluminescence is destroyed, but it can be placed in the water safely.
- Bioluminescence typically refers to the production of light by living organisms. Given the appearance and habitat of the Bioluminescence in-game, it appears to be modelled after Dinoflagellates, which are bioluminescent Plankton that can cause water to glow in a phenomenon known as Red Tide.
- Sometimes Bioluminescence does not disappear during the day.
- Bioluminescence in the inventory will disappear during the first time travelling into the Volcano, and to a new vanilla or Reign of Giants world (during world generation).
- Bioluminescence in the inventory will be lost when using Teleportato.
