For specific vegetable seeds, see Crop Seeds.

It's nice of the birds to share.

Walter, when examining Seeds.

Seeds are a Food Item commonly left on the ground by Birds. While they can be eaten, Seeds are primarily used for Farming by planting them in a farm plot to grow crops. When planted, Seeds have a chance to grow into Corn, Carrot, Pumpkin, Eggplant, Pomegranate, Durian or Dragon Fruit (see Farming for further information). Birds, Tallbirds, Smallish Tallbirds, Smallbirds, and Pigs can eat Seeds and will pick Seeds up if they find them on the ground. Pigs that eat Seeds don't produce Manure. Seeds can be used to bait Bird Traps.

In Don't Starve icon, when the temperature is 0 or below (which currently only happens during Winter), Seeds that have been planted will stop growing and cannot be forced to grow via Fertilizer.

Toasted Seeds[]

Birds only like uncooked seeds

Wendy, when examining Toasted Seeds.

Toasted Seeds are made by cooking Seeds over a Campfire, Fire Pit or Star. Unlike their raw counterpart, they restore 1 point of Health and cannot be planted or fed to birds. They also spoil four times faster than uncooked seeds.

In the Reign of Giants, Seeds can be gained by destroying Tumbleweeds, even during Winter. Seeds also have an additional chance to grow into Watermelons when planted.

In the Shipwrecked DLC, Seeds have an additional chance to grow into Watermelons or Sweet Potatoes.

In Hamlet DLC, Seeds have an additional chance to grow into Watermelons, Sweet Potatoes, Aloe, Asparagus or Radishes. The character Wormwood is able to plant Seeds directly into the ground without using a Farm. Also, Seeds can be bought for 1 Oincs at the Miss Sow's Floral Arrangements in the Pig City.

Don't Starve Together icon Don't Starve Together[]

In Don't Starve Together, feeding Seeds to a bird in a Birdcage will spawn Guano with a 33% chance, instead of fresh Seeds. Canaries also occasionally drop Seeds when flying away. Seeds have an additional chance to grow into Asparagus, Garlic, Potatoes, Onions, Peppers or Toma Roots.

In Reap What You Sow, Seeds chances depend on the seasons, Farm Plants have almost twice more chance to spawn during their favorite season. Seeds have also a 20% chance to grow into Weeds.

Prototype Tips[]

  • If fed to a bird in a Birdcage, it will produce fresh Seeds, therefore allowing the player to keep Seeds for as long as they want without rotting (In DST, birds will instead have a 33% chance of giving back Guano).
  • No seeds are dropped by birds in the Winter, but the occasional stale or even spoiled seed left over from last season may be found. Crows and Snowbirds will still eat the Seeds, essentially thinning their numbers.
  • When using Horticulture Abridged to grow farm crops you can give them enough water for their entire lifespan to obtain seeds provided they are in season, allowing players to start farms quickly.

Mosquito Bugs[]

  • If the Seeds are dropped on the Walrus Camp (during Spring-Autumn), they will get stuck and prevent the player from picking them up.
